Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacterium neisserria gonorrhoeae, which grows best
in moist, warm areas of the body.
Clinical manifestations
Symptoms are manifested between 2 and 21 days after sexual contact. Women may not have any
symptoms, contrary to men who show symptoms more frequently. Nevertheless, both women and men, when
infected, transmit the disease through social intercourse.
Symptoms include:
In women:
A yellowish or greenish vaginal discharge.
Itching or pain while urinating.
Painful menstrual period.
Lower abdominal pain.
No symptoms (sometimes).
In men:
A white, pus-like discharge from the penis.
Itching or pain while urinating.
Treatment: Antibiotics
If you do not get treated:
It can cause serious infections.
It can cause sterility both in men and women.
It can increase the possibility of ectopic pregnancy.
It can increase the risk of transmission to sexual partners.
It can cause vertical transmission (from an infected mother to her
child).
