Syphilis

It I caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium, which can be found in the blood and other bodily fluids.

Clinical manifestations
  • Open sores on the mouth or genitals approximately 21-25 after the infection.
  • The sores disappear, but their causes (spirochete of syphilis) remain in the body.
  • In an advanced stage, a transient skin rash appears. The rash will disappear but, if untreated, the person will remain a syphilis carrier.

Treatment: Antibiotics

If you don’t get treated
  • Syphilis can cause serious heart and brain problems or even death.
  • Syphilis can be transmitted to your sexual partner(s).
  • Syphilis can be transmitted vertically from mother to child.
